You may have an online network. But here’s how to build a smart network:
1. Be strategic. Social network theory shows your number of connections is less important than their diversity. If you are well-known, outside of your own organisation or professional field, then you can be a ‘bridge’, helpful to others, and to yourself. (LinkedIn users can analyse their network here).
2. Be selfless. The first principle of networking is to offer help to others. Contribute, before asking for help. Help will come.
