Many organisations want to develop an employee-centric approach to career development, but find it difficult to make a business case and call to action. Initiatives come and go without any real impact, whilst employees still feel dissatisfied with the career support they receive, leading to attrition and low engagement.

This discussion explored what it takes to build a compelling business led approach to career development, and explored the challenges of maintaining and aligning the focus on career development over the longer term.

Our ‘provocateur’ was Bill Walton from Applied Materials. Applied Materials is a leader in the field of manufacturing solutions for the semiconductor, flat panel display and solar photovoltaic industries.

Bill is Global Head of Employee Development and has successfully implemented a comprehensive strategy around careers that is aligned with many other processes. He has succeeded in making the focus on ‘career’ a core business-led activity, and shared some of the ways they are measuring impact.
